Two tips to prevent commonly caused damage to sanders:

Let the tool do the work - DON'T apply downwards pressure onto the sander or internal parts may break.

Check and replace the sanding sheet before it's worn through so that the pad isn't damaged. 

Doing this you can avoid being charged the replacement cost, reduce the gradual wear that leads to more work on volunteer repairers, parts costs to the library, and often sending the item to landfill and the catalogue becoming smaller and inconveniencing all members until we are donated or buy a new one.
